Current Recipient Overview and Eligibility

CONTINUED ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

To continue receiving the Washington State Opportunity Scholarship (WSOS) recipients must meet the eligibility criteria listed below. Your scholarship will be forfeited if you do not meet all requirements:

  1. Renewal: ALL scholarship recipients must complete the annual Renewal/Update Form each spring to let us know whether or not you will be renewing the scholarship for the following academic year.

In the form, you'll be able to indicate to us whether:
    • You're renewing the WSOS for the next academic year;
    • You've graduated with a bachelor's degree; OR
    • You're not renewing the scholarship because you no longer meet renewal criteria.

The form will be open during the month of June, and must be completed by July 3rd. Students who do not complete the Renewal/Update Form will forfeit any future scholarship funding.

If you are graduating or not planning to renew, please complete the Renewal/Update Form to formally decline the scholarship.

  2. STEM or health care class: You must enroll in at least ONE science, technology, engineering, math (STEM) or health care course per academic year (fall, winter (if applicable) and spring term only).

  3. Eligible major: You must continue to pursue one of the eligible high-demand majors listed here: (by alphabet; by category).

  4. Bachelor's degree: You must continue to pursue a bachelor's degree (i.e. four-year degree, not a two-year associate's degree). After you graduate with your first bachelor's degree, you are not eligible for further WSOS funding.

  5. Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP): You must meet your college or university's SAP policy. For further details, please check with your college or university regarding GPA requirements and minimum credit completion requirements.

  6. Full time enrollment: You must be enrolled full-time (12+ credits) each fall term and at least 6 credits each winter and/or spring term.

  7. Enroll each term: You must enroll each term during the academic year: (fall quarter/semester, winter quarter (if applicable), and spring quarter/semester).

You are not required to enroll summer term, and WSOS cannot provide funding for summer classes.

If you have extenuating circumstances that require you to take a term off, please contact us. If you need to take off more than a term during your time in the program, your scholarship will be forfeited; however you can re-apply if you meet the scholarship criteria during the next application window.

  8. Degree progress within the WSOS timeframe: You must continue to make progress toward your degree within the scholarship timeframe:

You can only receive WSOS funding for up to a maximum of five years (calculated as credits not years) as indicated below. Once you reach what WSOS considers to be your sixth year in college, you will not be eligible for further funding, even if you haven't received the full year of funding at each scholarship level. In addition, students who have earned over 225 quarter credits (including credits accrued through Running Start, IB or College in High School courses), or over 150 semester credits are not eligible for further funding.

    • If selected as a high school senior, you can receive up to five years of funding.

Please Note: Your years of scholarship funding will be adjusted based on the total number of credit earned, (including Running Start credits) when an official transcript is received.
If at the time of your initial application you were selected as a college student, the number of quarters or semesters you had completed at the time of application determines the number of years you will be eligible to receive funding.
    • Students who were in their first year of college at the time of application will only be eligible to receive WSOS funding for a maximum of four years.
    • Students who were in their second year of college at the time of application will only be eligible to receive WSOS funding for up to three years.
If you do not submit the documents required to increase your scholarship to the $5,000 level by what WSOS considers your fourth year of college, your scholarship will be forfeited at that time.

  9. Eligible Washington state college or university: You must enroll at one of the eligible Washington state colleges or universities.

  10. FAFSA completion: You must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by July 3 of each year.

  11. Federal Education Tax Credits: All WSOS Scholars must apply for Federal Education tax credits when you or your parents complete your annual tax return: You and/or your family must apply each year if eligible to do so. If your family is not eligible for the tax credits, there is no penalty and you will still be eligible for the scholarship provided you continue to meet all the renewal criteria. (Additional information about this requirement is available in the FAQ's.)
